I have somewhat diverse taste in music. Although there are many musical genres I’d like to know better (Help Wanted: Woman seeks musical sherpa to teach her the ways of classical, jazz, indie rock, and Tom Waits), my favorite artists are varied and always changing. Led Zeppelin, Nina Simone, Nirvana, Beck, Tribe Called Quest, and Public Enemy all spend equal time in my stereo. But I am here to tell you that it was a hard, long road that brought me to this day in my musical life.
I was raised on Easy Listening.
As a youngster in the 70’s, my earliest musical memories, after the Sesame Street records, are from 106.9 WSWT, Peoria’s Home of Easy Listening. I was weaned on Bread, Gordon Lightfoot, and Lou Rawls. While most of my peers have fond memories of an older sibling or parent introducing them to The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, or Heart, I have no such Almost Famous moment in my childhood. I wasn’t introduced to those bands until well into the 80’s, when their musical output was not at its peak. I thought Mick Jagger was a freak with terrifying lips, that Stevie Wonder was the King of Velveeta, that Heart’s career began (and ended) with All I Want to Do is Make Love to You.
I had no one in my life to tell me otherwise. In those first few years when the realm of my existence was my home and the family car, my parents made sure the radio dial never left 106.9. They would occasionally slip in a Ray Conniff Singers 8-track, and it was years before my ears were treated to anything beyond Engelbert Humperdink or America. Eventually television played its part in my musical rearing, but even then my exposure was limited to Donnie and Marie Osmond and Sonny and Cher.
Immediately upon watching my first episode of The Partridge Family, something inside me changed. With David Cassidy at the mike, music was suddenly sexy. Two of the first words I ever learned to spell were “Keith” and “Partridge.” I brought art projects home from pre-school that consisted of a tree, a sun, a stick figure, and the crayon scrawlings “Keith Partridge.” I taped each one to my bedroom door until it you could no longer see the door for the “art”. When I finally pulled the drawings down, the tape removed the paint from in a million little places on the wood. While my father furiously sanded the door in his workshop, I felt a hint of shame. My crush had gotten out of control, and personal property had been destroyed. It was my first taste of music’s dark side, and it was hardly my last. During playtime in kindergarten, I danced in a mad frenzy to the Village People’s YMCA. My kindergarten teacher reprimanded me during one such performance for getting too “aggressive” with the boys. I had worked myself into too much of a sweat for her comfort level, and had to spend the next playtime sitting on a bean bag while my fellow five year-olds boogied down.
In 1979 I started first grade, and rode a bus to school for the first time. Although I was forbidden from (and frightened of) the back seats of the vehicle due to my young age, I could still hear Queen reverberating from the boom boxes of the eighth graders twelve rows behind me. Although I sometimes misinterpreted the lyrics (it was years before I realized they weren't saying, “We are the Chestnuts”), the dramatic rock-opera beats seduced my ears. It was my first true exposure, other than Elvis, to rock and roll. My life would never be the same.
By the time the 80’s hit my parents no longer had full control of the radio. In order to maintain cafeteria credibility, I moved the dial of the hi-fi from 106.9 to 93.3. Anne Murray and Captain and Tennille were soon sharing the airwaves with Madonna and Michael Jackson. KZ93 was the contemporary rock station, although their playlist is now nothing more than the soundtrack to 80’s night at Alphabet Lounge. I don't think the term "pop" music existed back then, but that's certainly what we were listening to. Still, a precedent had been set in the Perino home. The new generation had voiced its opinion and been heard- WSWT had to rotate with KZ93.
At age eleven I joined Columbia House Record Club and was receiving monthly deliveries from artists ranging from Eddie Grant to Pat Benetar. Even my mom started getting into my music – she had joined an aerobics class and was memorizing dance moves to Huey Lewis tunes. Eventually MTV became a household fixture and once again I was able to picture the faces, big hair, and sparkled jewelry of the artists behind the music. By the time my brother had been kicked out of Catholic school and was bringing home Beastie Boys cassettes borrowed from his public school friends, WSWT was a distant memory, only played in the waiting room of my Dad’s psychology practice.
Still, I was missing a huge piece of music history that had transpired in the years before my birth. Thanks to an ex-nun music teacher named Mrs. Harmon, not only did I get to hear songs like Blowing in the Wind and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, but I also got to sing them. In the car ride home from what must have been a torturous three-hour school musical performance, my Dad grumbled about the song Mrs. Harmon had taught my sixth grade class that year.
“When the hippies were singing Aquarius,” he said, “some of us were off fighting a war.”
Soon it all made sense. In the tumultuous sixties, my parents were yanked from their American lives and shipped off to Tokyo. My father was drafted as an officer in the Army and was forced to delay his PhD. By the time he and my mother returned stateside, the damage was done. They hummed along to GI Blues, not Give Peace a Chance. Although now I understand, back then it meant I had to find some of the best music produced in recent years on my own.
This is where my neighbors Nina and Kara Koplas stepped in. Their Dad worked for IBM and their mother was an editor for a high-profile art magazine. Mr. and Mrs. Koplas had a loom in their basement and made their own ketchup. They sported ERA buttons and voted for Anderson in the 1980 Presidential election. Their daughters, both older than me, showed me the Growing Up and Liking It sex ed book a year we were taught it in school (interestingly, that also fell under Mrs. Harmon's job description.) Nina and Kara taught me adult words and told tales of public school lore. They also introduced me to Joan Baez and Cat Stevens. Although the Koplas album collection had its disappointments (they owned the Broadway version of the Grease Soundtrack, not the Olivia Newton-John one, for example), it was different enough from my own to be educational. I am grateful to Nina and Kara for many things, but mostly I’m grateful that they helped fill some of the musical voids that transpired between man walking on the moon and Michael Jackson’s moonwalk.
My high school boyfriend picked up where they left off. Chris not only showed the telltale signs of an easy listening childhood (he often quoted Gordon Lightfoot and took me to the America concert at Steamboat Days), but he also had Too Short and Johnny Cash albums. When I first realized I was falling for him, Pink Floyd’s Time was playing in his stereo. Chris had the most eclectic musical taste of anyone I knew – and most importantly, when he left for a week-long family vacation, he left his entire Led Zeppelin collection in my charge. It was the greatest gift anyone had given me. Thanks to you I’m much obliged... such a pleasant stay.
Throughout the years I’ve met many wonderful people who have influenced my musical taste. Many of the artists I love today were introduced to me by a special person at a special time, and although the music itself is the primary reason I still listen, I confess to sometimes listening just to remember. Now I enjoy much of the same music my friends do, but I have never forgotten my roots. We all love The Beatles and The Stones, but I'm the only one in the crew who got to experience WSWT. In those rare moments when Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the Old Oak Tree or Baby I’m A Want You play, I’m the one who’s singing the loudest.
Even if that means I’m the only one singing.
There it all is in a nutshell. I remember all throughout my childhood and into my adolesence my parents radio station dial never changed. 96.5 KYXY- easy listening and soft rock. I also remember the very first time my mom let me change the dial on the radio- Memorial Day Weekend when I was 15 years old.
Even if my musical tastes have changed or are different than the constant reptition of easy listening- there remains something comforting and sweet about going back there. I remember after September 11, 2001, I couldn't listen to music. It seemed almost like the space of silence was the only thing that could keep me sane- music seemed to encapsulize an emotion that I would have rather perferred to keep locked away. Slowly and gradually, the only thing I could listen to was my mom's radio station- each song familiar even if I hadn't heard it for many years, even if I couldn't remember the title, who sang what song or more than just a couple of words in the chorus. It seemed to bring a piece of me back slowly that I thought I had lost.
And sometimes when other people sing do they realize they knew the song the whole time.
You’ve captured my youth within your ‘70’s music experience, although I was 11 years your senior (I actually graduated high school in 1979). Nonetheless The Partridge Family was the first music of my youth's enlightenment (or corruption depending on your viewpoint) beyond the dusty and scratched Disney albums and musical soundtracks my sister and first owned.
My mom's music was my primary first adult musical taste. I first recall in the 60's learning the catchy new song "Feelin' Groovy" and learning what cobblestones were from my mom. Later Carol King and Neil Diamond were all our new favorites. My cousins, sister and myself got the Partridge Family LP for Christmas in 1970 or '71. We proceeded to do one lip-synching gig after another that holiday driving our families to nauseatingly new heights of tolerance. I thought we had a chance to go all the way. My cousin Tami had gotten a very Shirley Jones ruffley blouse for Christmas that made her Shirley Partridge right away and her brother Dolph was an aspiring David Cassidy so he was it too. I gravitated to the back of our newly organized group and while I was about the same age and had the same growing out of control hair (but it wasn't red thank goodness) as Danny Bonaduce's was. I really found his character annoying so despite age and likeness I became Chris Partridge...the drummer. We had a snare drum with practice pad so I banged away as really the only non-faking musician next to my younger sister Beth who had no choice but to be Tracy Partridge. She also played live with the tambourine while wearing her closest apparel to Tracy's apparel (her granny-style night gown). Her performance was enthusiastic if not gymnastic since it entailed rhythmic jumping up and down on the couch. Yes it was also annoying, but she was included. After our second consecutive torture session or rather gig, our family revoked our notions of legitimacy with a burst of laughter when our up to then brilliant faux David Cassidy revealed that he would prefer we played side one a third time since he didn't know side two. I was both furious and elated I had fresh put-down for my slightly older cousin. How could "David Cassidy not know the second side when he supposedly recorded the album?!? Our cover was blown and just on the verge of us charging 25 cents admission to be deposited in a specially fashioned cardboard milk carton. We may have gotten one sympathy coin from our cousin or aunt's boyfriends. Those were some of the golden years of our youth. In the meantime, FM radio was where it was at aside from my deep after school hi-fi bouts with the Carpenters and Neil Diamond's Hot August Night (I actually was quite fond of Crunchy Granola Suite from another LP of his too).
My sister and I finally got Sears’ AM/FM clock radio's (analog, not digital clock, but it was back-lit and had my first oh, so familiar snooze button). I recall delving into FM programming trying to decode the lyrics into my juvenile language of life thus far. I grew a lot through that. I was terribly annoyed however that my sister was less intrigued and was squandering her technology by listening to top 10 radio stations! Why was she coming of age differently. What was so special about Andy Gibb? I protested and lobbied that my mom intervene and force her to listen to FM too. My protests only hardened my sisters resolve to seek her own musical identity. Meanwhile I would awaken to Hari-Krishna chants early Sunday mornings to do my paper route. Many times I was late getting up since the chants were so dream-like and along with unlimited snooze button access they conspired to keep me in a helpless sleep state until normal rock programming resumed at dawn. Loud abrupt knocks from my paper route manager on the front door and upstairs shouts from my mom usually jolted me back to life in terror of failing my commercial obligations.
In junior high I discovered both The Beatles (just-post break-up) and Elton John as a current artist on the rise. The Beatles were literally a trip for me. In the afternoons after school and before my paper route, I'd turn the rocking chair towards the corner hi-fi phonograph (with stack ability that allowed me to hear nearly uninterrupted sides 1&3 2&4 1&4 or 2&3 combinations. I know there are a few more combinations, but I felt obligated to get their relative chronology correct since they were no longer together) and listened to The Beatles 1967-70 greatest hits double LP with great intensity. It was my first purchased album ($8 although slightly used) from my best friend Mark. Only prior to that I had tried recording Elton John's Madman Across the Water onto reel-to-reel tape but only achieved muffled sounding success.
My first setback in my claim to musical identity back then was when an elderly hard of hearing second cousin Carl came to visit us. I was in the midst of trying to decipher more and more Beatles lyrics when he let out a laugh on a line I still couldn’t get. Carl was in denial about his degrading hearing and he usually couldn't hear anything you said the first time, yet for some reason he could clearly understand John Lennon singing, "If you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow.” In that moment, despite his elucidating a yet undiscovered line for me, I truly wanted to claim back my music from this old guy's musical world of Laurence Welk (I mean literally every time he visited us we'd all have to go have lunch at Laurence Welk's Trailer Park and golf course in Fallbrook, California because he liked Welk’s show so much). Maybe Laurence Welk's polka music was Carl's Partridge Family, but we both can't like the Beatles and what the heck did that line about Mao mean anyway? Well at least he didn't mind my music and I continued to listen on in those early days.
In the mid-70's I had fond encounters with many groups. First it was The Who, and then begrudgingly the Beatles' arch rivals The Stones. I felt a bid like I'd betrayed my former favorite by finally entertaining the Stones. But hey, they were the ones that had broken up after my first record single of “Hey Jude” melted in the back window of my Dad’s car while at the zoo. What a double let down that was between the Beatles and me. Since the Stones had endured. I gave them a full listen starting on a self-imposed diet of the earliest Stones LP’s in order of their release. In 1976, at age 15, while working as both a paperboy in the afternoon and a dishwasher mostly on the weekends, I bought my first real stereo. I wasn't a cheap all-in-one-weak-ass hi-fi unit, but then it wasn’t the bitchin’ Quadra-phonic system I had in mind either. It was separate components with a Pioneer SX-434 receiver that had 15 watts per channel and a BIC turntable that could stack 6-records without the whole bunch crunching down on the tone arm like my mom’s hi-fi phonograph was prone to doing. This was teenaged luxury to me and on Sunday mornings after I had worked until two or three a.m. washing dishes and then had gotten up again at 5a.m. to deliver the Sunday paper. I would get home just after dawn truly exhausted, still smelling like fish and newsprint and prior to stumbling into bed with almost two hours of music stacked-up and the last record set to repeat until I stopped it about noon, I would take the time to dust each LP with the DiscWasher because I absolutely hated the sound of dust and skips on my records!
Music back then was my drug of choice. In fact, I certainly had the understanding of real drug states prior to ever venturing into their influences directly. I actually felt quite prepared by the music of my youth in this way, which helped me be more a part of the 70's when I got to be a bit older and bought my own bong.
Shortly after that music culture to me lost its glory when MTV was born somewhere around 1980 or so (I really don’t care exactly when). Initially I enjoyed seeing Mick and Sting demanding their MTV like a newly gained right of youth culture. Take that Disco! Disco was the bane of ‘70’s music that had me engaged until I got hooked on Disco for Christmas…yuck. I did get into studio 54 on my first visit to New York in ‘79, but I didn’t fit in with this my cousin Dolph’s musical world. I guess that’s where you end up when you don’t bother listening to a record’s “B-side” or maybe that’s where O.D.ing on Frampton Comes Alive eventually lead, but I digress). However, after the first two days of MTV’s existence and their overly repeating the handful of videos that existed then, I decided it was more of a threat to youth than youth finally having their own place on TV that supposedly represented them. I stopped watching with any regularity or personal identity associated. From there I went fairly independent in my musical taste. Not out of spite, but out of my sincere interest in what I had come to like on my own. Thank goodness for Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, the Alman Bros., the rest of my classic rock, classical music and especially Bob Marley.
In retrospect though, I’d say the real gateway drug for me was TV, which lead to the Partridge Family. (That is unless you also count sugar, which preceded it all). I guess that path is a bit of the norm these days in the tightly linked TV & Music marketing industries. I recently got a used turntable and I still have all my old albums. I keep meaning to give them a spin since they all haven’t been replaced by their CD versions, yet technical difficulties have prevailed thus far.
There’s so much more I could have included in this mostly 70’s music stroll down memory lane, but that’ll have to wait for another day. I dedicate these memories to my sister Beth Ann, who as it turned out also has a somewhat independent musical taste despite her AM upbringing. Hopefully this will give her a few laughs and fill a few gaps in her memory of 70’s music. Peace.
I read the posting about your family changing from WSWT to KZ-93 with great interest. I was the morning man for KZ-93 when the station signed on and for the next 3 years. You're right... it was pop music and radio hasn't been the same since.
