When I think of all the things I wanted to be when I grew up, I revisit the mind of an idealistic child. Artist, doctor, teacher, writer, lawyer, concert pianist, gymnast, pilot, actress, scientist, dancer, photographer, and psychologist were among my top choices. Although I dabbled in many of the above activities, I ended up in a career that has nothing to do with any of them. My name is Gina, and I am a salesperson.
How people like myself become salespeople is not unlike how people become cat owners - you don't plan to do it, but one day you wake up and realize that you're selling something for a living (or, in the latter case, living with your ex-boyfriend's sister's cat.) There are many things in the world, even beyond career choices and pet ownership, that don't have to be planned to be rewarding. I can't help but think, however, that there is something wrong with a profession that no one ever aspires to enter, yet so many find themselves in.
I suppose it has something to do with demand -- when I started searching for a job after college, I didn't exactly see a ton of help wanted ads for concert pianists. I had a bachelors in psychology, was relatively unskilled, and needed cash. One month later I was living in Chicago and reverse-commuting an hour each way to Waukegan, Illinois, where I had just started a job as an advertising account executive for a local newspaper. (For those of you who don't know, account executive is just a fancy way of saying "salesperson.") There I was, 22 years old and taking notes every time a new Jiffy Lube or dog grooming facility sprouted in my territory. Everywhere I looked I saw a possible quarter page ad (it's the perfect job for the obsessively-minded.) I pounded the pavement and worked my ass off for a year. Although I learned a lot, I grew concerned when every Sunday night I would sink into a dark irrecoverable depression, often accompanied with tears and the desire to consume vast amounts of alcohol. Evidently, I hated my job, and needed a change.
Fast forward to my first sales job in New York. I was working for a market research company based in London, and although I was underpaid and overworked, I got a lot out of that job. I actually learned what it was like to be on a career path, and within a year was managing my own little sales team. Sure, it was only two people, and they were my friends, but I was moving up in the world. I got to travel all over the country and meet with high level executives in Fortune 500 companies. Every quarter the managing director visited from London and threw a huge party for the New York office. It was as if he knew he was underpaying us and wanted to make up for it in alcohol. I learned a lot at that company, and had a blast. But in time, like anything, the job lost its charm. We were growing fast and not hiring the same caliber of people as in the early days. To go from employee number twelve to not knowing the name of the person in the cubicle next to me was a bit of a culture shock. Plus, I had to train a steady stream of idiotic department heads, and most of my friends quit. I finally gave my notice, and didn't know half of the people that gathered in the conference room for my going away cake. Clearly it was time to move on.
By the time I left that job it was November 1998 and the internet had just started to become a household word. I was offered a job at an online advertising company called DoubleClick that very few people had heard of, but those who had knew that it was a great company. I interviewed with them seven times before I got the job -- basically I worked harder at getting a job at DoubleClick than I did at getting into college. But man, was it worth it. I had so many smart people around me to learn from and I was literally being paid to surf the web. The company continued to grow, as did my responsibilities within it, and I really felt like I was working for something I believed in. I know I wasn't exactly Feeding The Children, but I was keeping the internet free for all users, and having fun doing it. At one point I was responsible for creating sponsorships around the South Park characters on comedycentral.com. Another deal I put together involved the space shuttle flying around the pages of space.com. My job was challenging and entertaining -- what more could a girl ask for?
DoubleClick grew tremendously, and every day it seemed we lost a conference room because we needed to accommodate a new batch of employees who needed desks. Eventually we were conducting meetings on a card table outside of the women's restroom. We were bursting at the seams, and signed a lease for new office space on West 33rd Street and 10th Avenue. If you're not familiar with West 33rd Street, it's a shit neighborhood. It's near nothing, except a dumpy old Irish bar and the west side highway. You have to go 10 blocks north or south before you can find a restaurant decent enough to take a client to. But where DoubleClick lacked, they compensated for in other areas. The office was sprawling – in fact it was previously a skating rink, before Chelsea Piers came on the scene the Sky Rink moved there. Our offices on the top floor had high ceilings, daylight streaming through the windows, free sodas, a basketball court, and a spacious outdoor terrace overlooking midtown Manhattan. As the company continued to grow and we moved onto more and more floors, the amenities grew to include a rock climbing wall, ping pong and pool tables, old school video games, and cute little luncheon areas. We spent every waking hour at that place, but sometimes it was pretty darn enjoyable. The company meetings were like pep rallies – at one point we rented out Hammerstein Ballroom for an internal meeting. We had sales conferences in Florida and Puerto Rico. We drank and ate for free every night. One woman’s job was to arrange parties and events. She would send around invitiations for wine tastings, salsa lessons, museum outings. (She’s also the same person, who on my first day at the office, told me to “lose the suit.” At first I was a bit put off by that, but who wouldn’t want to come to work in knee-high boots and casual skirts if they could? I quickly modified my wardrobe.) We had a resident chef and dogs were allowed in the office for the big Halloween party (conducted during working hours, of course.) Even our CEO dressed up in a Halloween costume. Of course we loved what we did – we would have been fools not to.
As DoubleClick grew, so did people’s awareness of the company. It got to the point that if I was out playing pool with strangers and they asked me where I worked, upon hearing I heralded from the Click, they would cluck their tongues and whistle, as if I had a million dollar check in my pocketbook. I didn’t have to explain that I wasn’t getting rich off it because I felt like I was rich – and I’m not just talking about stock options. DoubleClick treated each of its employees as a valuable commodity, and we gave the company every ounce of creativity and hard work we had within us. Other friends of mine joined internet companies and had similar positive experiences, but I don’t think any of them were quite on par with mine. DoubleClick was known for our ability to have a good time -- we packed the Roxy for an industry party and our clients were still talking about it a year later. I brought my friends along on happy hours and they were welcomed with open arms. I made out shamelessly with my colleagues and even got a boyfriend out of it. It’s as if I was part of one big extended family, and was getting paid to have fun with them. It was an unbelievable time.
I don’t have to tell you how the story ends. People figured out that you actually had to be profitable in order to maintain a viable business, and 70% of our advertisers went under. Without them, DoubleClick’s media division was in serious trouble, and we started our own layoffs in December of 2000. DoubleClick's employees went from feeling like VIPs to line items on a profit and loss sheet. The company picnic was removed from the calendar, the sales contests were cancelled, they made us turn in our cellphones, and fired the chef. I survived about eight rounds of layoffs before my group was finally sold to a direct marketing company. Today, my old DCLK stock options are worth next to nothing, I’m working twice as hard for half the money, and I don’t see people coming in and out of the office with leis around their necks and frothy drinks in hand when I work past 6 pm anymore. In other words, I work in the real world now. I've gone from feeling like a succesful career person to just another salesperson again. And if I think I have it bad, you should see my friends who got laid off months ago and are returning from their trips around the world. They're even less equipped to deal with the post-internet job market than I am. And it's not just because we don't get free stuff anymore -- the internet really spoiled us into thinking that we were doing something BIG , that we were going somewhere FAST, and that what we did made a difference. With the exception of a few people who have landed creative jobs, those of us who are fortunate enough to be working are in uninspiring, regular careers.
So this is what the real world is like, huh? I miss the olden days.
